Eric Schoch

In another life, I might have been a “lab rat” working in biomedical research, but in this one I’m glad to have a job that lets me work with IU School of Medicine scientists and explain their discoveries to the world.

As manager of science communications I’m responsible for getting the word out about our research activities at the school and the impact this work has on people and the economy of Indiana. This includes writing news releases and other articles, overseeing the school’s research web pages, and responding to inquiries from the news media and the public. I supplement my writing duties with some photography and video work – whatever it takes to get our message out. I also prepare a variety of internal communications documents and presentations.

Before joining the IU School of Medicine in 1999 I spent nearly 20 years as a reporter and editor at The Indianapolis Star, covering city government, business, health and medicine, science and technology -– the work was much like what I do now, explaining exciting, but sometimes complex, things to the world. I also spent three years as a reporter at The Lorain (Ohio) Journal, followed by a stint at the University of Chicago for a master’s degree in urban studies before joining The Star. A native of Indianapolis, I received my undergraduate degree in history at the University of Michigan.
