Androphy to Lead Indiana University Dermatology Department

Elliot Androphy, M.D., has been named chair of the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology.
Dr. Androphy joins IU from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he most recently served as vice chair for research in the Department of Medicine and as a professor in the departments of dermatology, medicine and molecular genetics and microbiology.
Prior to joining the UMMS faculty, he spent 11 years at the New England Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine, including appointments as a professor and vice chair of the department of dermatology.
He holds a medical degree from the University of Rochester and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Brandeis University.
As a researcher, Dr. Androphy explores the pathogenesis of papillomavirus infections, which serve as a model to understand how normal human cells are induced toward cancer. His research also explores the genetics and pathogenesis of spinal muscular atrophy, a common form of muscular dystrophy.
He succeeds Jeffrey Travers, M.D., Ph.D., who stepped down to focus more time on his research.
