Neuro-immunologist Selected to Lead IU School of Medicine Department

Kathryn Jane Jones, Ph.D., director of the Neuroscience Institute at the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago, and president of the American Association of Anatomists, has accepted the position of chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Following formal approval by the IU trustees, Dr. Jones will begin her new duties Jan. 1.
She will succeed David B. Burr, Ph.D., who has served as professor and chair of anatomy and cell biology since 1990.
Dr. Jones’ appointments at Loyola University include professor of microbiology and immunology (2009-present), cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy (1994-2009) and otolaryngology (2007-present). Dr. Jones also is a research career scientist at Hines VA Hospital Research and Development Service. She will have an adjunct appointment at the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.
Dr. Jones holds a bachelor of science degree and certificate in physical therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a doctorate in neuroanatomy from the University of Illinois. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at The Rockefeller University in the Laboratories of Neurobiology and Behavior, and Neuroendocrinology.
Her research interests include the therapeutic use of steroid hormones in neuronal regeneration, neural-immune interactions in nerve injury and repair, combinatorial treatment approaches in spinal cord injury, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal motoneuron disease.
Currently, Dr. Jones is working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in otolaryngology to translate the use of steroid hormones in different types of peripheral nerve injury.
