Dr. Spitzberg named Vice Chair of Adult Clinical Affairs in the Department of Ophthalmology, Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute
“Since joining our full-time faculty four years ago, Dr. Spitzberg has brought his considerable experience from years in private practice combined with his previous 14-year faculty affiliation with the department, enhancing our clinical programs,” said Louis B. Cantor, M.D., chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology.
“A true leader, Dr. Spitzberg has championed our efforts to develop satellite facilities in Mooresville and Lebanon and will continue to help our department grow in this new role,” Dr. Cantor said.
Dr. Spitzberg began his medical career intending to become a neurosurgeon. Enticed by ophthalmology and the opportunity to teach medical students and residents, Dr. Spitzberg switched to ophthalmology while in the Army. Dr. Spitzberg received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Indiana University, where he also completed his residency and fellowship training. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons.
Last year, Dr. Spitzberg and his wife Alana provided support to the Glick Eye Institute, naming the 100-seat first floor conference room. Dr. Spitzberg and his wife both wanted to provide support for the new building and decided to support the conference room, a place where faculty, visiting professors and researchers, residents and fellows, and students and staff can meet to exchange ideas and discuss topics related to ophthalmology.
Dr. Spitzberg had several private practices in Indianapolis and returned to IU in 2008 at the urging of Dr. Cantor and Robert D. Yee, M.D., who was then chair of the department.
“I really do enjoy working with the residents and students and being involved in teaching, education and clinical care,” said Dr. Spitzberg. “I can turn to my tenure in private practice to provide assistance to the department with business development, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the development of our satellite clinics in Mooresville and Lebanon.”
“Dr. Spitzberg’s experience has helped our department grow and we are pleased that he has accepted this new role to work with our clinical faculty and provide strategic clinical planning,” said Dr. Cantor.
